Note: Community participation is crucial for this type of project to be successful. Permission for access by landowners must be allowed before baiting and any of the deer trapping can begin.
Deer Trapping and Euthanasia:
This process is safer for civilians due to no high powered rifles are involved. This process could be utilized in areas wherever there's an issue about or city ordinances prohibiting the discharge of firearms. The process of Deer Trapping, using clover traps, drop nets or rocket nets, is accompanied by euthanasia employing a gun shot or a portable captive bolt to the head. Keep in mind deer that are trapped are subjected to stress while immobilized by traps or nets.
Establishing Bait Sites:
Bait sites are best established during the winter month when natural food sources are at there least. Pro Deer Control will meet landowners to locate possible baited sites for trapping deer. Whole apples, Alfalfa, or even whole corn can be used as bait. The trap site is baited prior trapping so the deer get habitual to the bait being at the trapping site. Bait sites for deer trapping are most effective in areas with high deer numbers to maximize captures per trapping sessions. In addition areas with blocks of woodland cover allow for security and traveling corridors for deer.
Clover Traps are easy to assemble in the backyards of helping property owners. Traps will be fastened open so deer could freely come and go. After some time traps will be set so the deer can be trapped and euthanized shortly after.
Drop nets are large in size and are used for trapping multiple deer. A drop net requires the system to be setup on poles and released with an electronic trigger control to release the net. Similar to other deer trapping, pre baiting the site is necessary to keep the deer going below the supported net. When the time is suitable, and the staff at Pro Deer Control is ready, the net will be released and the deer will be euthanized there after.
Rocket nets are similar to the drop nets, for they are triggered by Pro Deer Control staff from a concealed blind. However, rocket nets are large and requires compressed air powered to lift the net off the ground and carry it over deer at the pre baited pile. As one could anticipate, firing the net could alarm the neighborhood with the noisy bang. Therefore, we touch base with the Village Police Department and neighbors before firing the net. This deer trapping process is of last resort for the trap shy deer.
